Biography

Imagine placing a microphone in a field, running the recordings through an app and being provided with a precise list of species present in that location. While that is already possible for some species, most are not yet discoverable. In my PhD project I plan on experimenting with different deep learning approaches focusing on the task of anomaly detection. I am passionate about interdisciplinary and open science, developing tools that can integrate new technologies and make them accessible for researchers and organizations. Building on my experience in signal processing I fine-tuned a machine learning model to detect North Atlantic humpback whale song in my masters thesis, which then sparked my curiosity to combine machine learning with bioacoustics. With affordable microphones and state of the art machine learning algorithms we can better understand biodiversity and help to halt its decline.
